A Helping Hand for the Nursing Staff in the Hemodialysis Room

Li-Ya Zheng, Group Leader
Han-Yang Clinic

For many years, pricking pain from needle puncture was the worst nightmare for most hemodialysis patients. Therefore, it is expected for a nursing staff to practice ways to enhance skills in needle insertion in order to alleviate pain and fear in patients; while caring and extending the life-span of the fistula is the goal pursued by the institutions.

Our clinic introduced Firapy (WS™ Far-infrared Therapy Unit, broad spectrum therapeutic device) in May 2002 to help tackle the problems associated with fistula care. From my clinical experience of using this device, I found that it was very beneficial.

The blood vessels of hemodialysis patients are easily dull or become fibrotic. Using the device for 30 to 40 minutes on the problematic site before hemodialysis can significantly enhance the success rate of needle puncture.

Furthermore, blood volume during the hemodialysis can be significantly increased by using the device during the procedure when there is insufficient blood flow in the artery.

I am glad that the clinic started to use Firapy (WS™ Far-infrared Therapy Unit) as a complementary device. This has further improved the quality of hemodialysis of this clinic.

The use of Firapy (WS™ Far-infrared Therapy Unit) can promote the metabolism of deep tissues and improve the conditions of near non-functional fistula, prevent vascular sclerosis, extend the life-span of the fistula, and promote the appearance of dull veins to facilitate needle puncture. This has, in fact, rescued dialysis patients from their worst nightmare and is a great blessing for them.
